Photographie historique vietnamienne, les routes de Hong Kong à Cholon, quartier chinois de Saigon
Pour la période indochinoise, l’historien François Drémeaux révèle un fait intrigant : Hong Kong fut le premier port de l’Indochine française. Ce choix a été influencé par plusieurs facteurs, l’un des principaux attraits étant les taxes avantageuses et le système de port franc de la ville.
L’administration vietnamienne de la dynastie des Nguyen a également reconnu cet avantage. En 1865, ils envoyèrent le Dr Dang Huy Tru en mission chinoise pour explorer le développement actuel de Hong Kong. A cette époque, la photographie n’était pas encore implantée au Vietnam, mais Hong Kong comptait déjà quelques studios. Le plus ancien semble être celui de G. E. Petter, qui a fait sa première annonce dans le numéro du 7 août 1861 du China Mail.
Au cours de son voyage, Dang Huy Tru a capturé deux portraits : l’un habillé en tenue de cour et l’autre ressemblant à un marchand chinois. Deux ans plus tard, il retourne en Chine et, lors d’une visite officielle au Guangdong en 1867, il acquiert du matériel photographique. À son retour à Hanoï, il crée le premier studio photo au Vietnam.
La photographie a gagné en popularité à Hong Kong et des photographes chinois ont commencé à émerger. Pun Lun Studio, fondé en 1864, se distingue comme l’un des studios les plus anciens et les plus renommés. Son succès conduit à l’ouverture de franchises à Foochow (Fuzhou), Saigon et Singapour. Notamment, les photos de Saigon et de ses habitants prises par Pun Lun Studio offrent un aperçu précieux du passé de la ville, remontant aux environs de 1880.
Notre collection exclusive d’archives de la période indochinoise jusqu’en 1975 provient de Cholon, un quartier chinois distinct de Saigon qui a préservé son héritage chinois. Ces studios historiques étaient principalement situés le long de la rue principale de Dong Khanh (ancien nom de la rue Trang Hung Dao). Parmi les objets fascinants présentés figure un manuel photographique, imprimé vers 1931 par Shanghai Press à Shanghai. Ce manuel, conçu pour les photographes chinois de l’intérieur, constitue un lien tangible, retraçant une partie des racines chinoises dans l’histoire de la photographie vietnamienne.
