Guangdong – Globalized Mao Portrait
$150.00 – $350.00Price range: $150.00 through $350.00
In the early 2000, China was not as powerful as now, twenty years after. This recent growth is the result of the government’s policy of going abroad, launched in 2002, in the wake of the country’s accession to the WTO. Reforms launched earlier by Deng Xiao Ping were largely adopted, especially in the Special economic zones of China (SEZs) oriented to foreign trade to which Guangzhou belonged.
But Mao was still in the mind of the people and on the wall of the Forbidden City, despite some disastrous legacies.
This photo taken in Guangzhou in the small interior without window is revealing the daily life of its owners. The only incoming sunlight from the roof enlightens this portrait, just as a religious and pop-art icon.
