At the beginning of photography’s history, photographers, painters began to argue about the relationship between the scientific and artistic aspects of this new medium. Is it a tool for recording facts or “a way of projecting an emotional intent into the viewer’s realm of imagination”.
First use of the term “pictorial” can be found in the book in 1869 entitled Pictorial Effect in Photography: Being Hints on Composition and Chiaroscuro for Photographers (by English photographer Henry Peach Robinson), chiaroscuro ‒ an Italian term used by painters and art historians that referring to the use of dramatic lighting and shading to convey an expressive mood.
