The Áo dài is the iconic Vietnamese national garment, worn by women and men. It has been recognized as the national costume during the reign of the Nguyen dynasty in the 18th Century.  Named Áo giao lĩnh, then Áo tứ thân, it has evolved from the traditional design with high collars to some modern style in the 50s during the American War Time like  Áo dài with boat neck, introduced by Madame Nhu, first lady of South Vietnam.

Posed in Hoi An old city , this Áo dài created by the designer Le Thanh Phuong looks very contemporary also because of the short haircut of the model. Traditions and evolution co-exist in a delicate balance for women in the Vietnamese society.
