After the overthrow of the Ming Dynasty of China in the 17th century, Ming supporters took refuge in South East Asia. In Viet Nam, they settled in Bien Hoa and then in Cholon. The city became the capital of the rice trade opening the port of Saigon throughout international trade.
“Riders trotted along the bank of the arroyo crowded with Chinese sampans and junks, and went back to the vessel Donai. Docked vessels unloaded their goods, and coolies covered with piles of crates and barrels with tarpaulins. It smelled like seaports: dust, grain, and tar.” – Claude Farrère -1905
